One More Quilt & A Surprise

Tonight I would like to share some pictures of a quilt that my step dad, Gene, made.  He made it from start to finish except the quilting {I did that part for him}.  I quilted this one before I went to Missouri in July but I couldn’t share then because I didn’t tell mom I was bringing it with me.

Mom was originally going to quilt it on her Pfaff but it’s pretty big so she asked if I could do it instead.  The catch…she had already started quilting it so she wasn’t sure I would be able to load it on Roscoe and finish it up.  I was pretty sure I could so I said I would do it.

The only downfall…mom had hundreds of pins in it that I had to take out.  Yuck!  I’m so grateful I have Roscoe and my days of pinning quilt sandwiches are over.  Once I had all the pins out I just pinned the backing to my frame and went to town.  Easy Peasy.

I used a large stippling to quilt the center panel of cars.  Boy, Roscoe sure is fuzzy in this picture.

I just did some squiggly lines inside the HSTs and squares.  I wasn’t sure what I really wanted to do but I like how this turned out.

I tried to imitate the flames in the border.  It was my first attempt at doing anything like this so I think it turned out pretty good.

I think Gene really liked his surprise!  I wish I could have finished the binding but I ran out of time.  I’m so glad I was able to finish it and surprise him.  I sure do love him and mom of course!

For some reason I didn’t take a picture of the whole quilt.  I guess I was just to excited that I finished it.

Now it’s time for one last surprise….it’s been pretty quiet around here so I think we need a little giveaway!

And just for fun I’m not telling you what the prizes are.  Yes, that’s right, prizes.  I’m giving away 5 of my favorite notions.  These are items I use all the time because they are my faves!

  1. I’m not sure if it counts as a notion by my new mini LED gooseneck light (non-magnetic) that I was able to attatch to my machine is my favorite right now. Especially as the days get shorter and more of my sewing time is without sunshine in my sewing room. Thanks for the chance at your mystery giveaway.

  2. Love “that purple thang” It goes missing all the time in my sewing room, but whenever I have it around, it’s good for turning things around, and gives a good corner. thanks for the giveaway.

  3. You are going to laugh, but one of my favorite notions is my crab fork/pick. It s a tiny fork on one end and a flat spoonish thing on the other. Makes poking out corners super easy and removing staples a breeze for my ribbon quilt. Kinda untraditional, but is awesome!

  4. I do alot of needle turn and wool applique — so I just love my little serrated edge scissors.

Love Gene’s quilt — thanks for sharing!

  5. Gene did a great job making the quilt top and love the way you quilted it. Good job from both of you.

My favorite notion is my rotary cutter.

  6. My favorite notion would have to be my small pair of snipping scissors – I don’t even know if they are called scissors – perfect for snipping threads. Am lost at the machine if they are not nearby. I’ve got two but never sure where they both are at the same time. I’m a follower and will find something wonderful to pin!

  7. One of my favorite notions is my teflon pressing sheet! I like to applique using fusible interfacing, then turning it right side out, and pressing in place– no raw edges! 🙂 Having the teflon sheet makes the process so much easier!!! 🙂

  8. My favorite notion is my rotary cutter. I really wanted to say my husband because he does all of my cutting, but thought he might not like being called a notion.

Loved Gene’s quilt. He looks very happy wrapped up in it.

  9. My rotary cutter would be my favorite notion. 🙂 As I can’t imagine how long it would take to cut everything with scissors!

Love the quilt you finished! And the flame quilting is awesome! 🙂

  10. It’s a toss-up for my favorite notion between my rotary cutter (I use it constantly since I started quilting) and my hem gauge (for checking that 1/4″ seam). I love surprises – thanks for a fun giveaway!

  11. Hiya! First of all, I am an email follower, so I get all of your posts, YAY. As far as a favorite notion, it has to be my rotary cutter, can’t imagine using scissors for all that cutting anymore. Thanks for having the giveaway. Blessed be, hugs!!!

  12. So hard to choose just one fave but the Clover Needle Threader is something I’ve used often lately as these old eyes can use some help threading a size 11 needle!
Yes, I am a Happy Follower. Thanks for op to enter your drawing.

  13. I really like my rotary cutter. I was just going over some old(like 20 years ago)ufo’s and all the pieces were cut by scissor. I think I got two blocks hand pieced and then the whole project got put aside. No wonder it became a ufo.

  14. Favorite notions – that’s so hard! My rotary cutter, can’t live without that. And my 12 1/2 inch ruler, I use that a lot. BUT – I also have this mechanical marking pencil and 1/4 inch marking ruler for making HSTs, and can’t live without those!

  15. In quilting there are so many tools that are essential and required to work together, that being said, the handiest thing that I use and made myself is a ring finger pin cushion!!

  16. My favourite notion, some days it’s my seam ripper :
Most of the time it’s the needle threader on my machine (this probably wouldn’t be classified as a “notion”) it’s saved my bacon on quite a few occassions.
Thank you for the chance 🙂

  17. Being a newbie, and a rather cash poor one right now, I don’t have many notions. I have my rotary cutter and my cutting mat and ruler, and of course, my 32 year old seam ripper (yes, it is my original seam ripper from home economics class in middle school). Maybe it’s time for a new one?

  18. Very pretty and bright quilt! I love my new scissors I just bought! So fun to cut with sharp scissors….funny how one uses items that do not work so well before one realizes a new one is needed!

  19. Well my favorite notion was my sharper than sharp pair of gingher 5″ scissors…they just flew through anything in their way including my index finger…it took a while to get back into my favorite’s again and now they are way down that list (I am quite wary and not in such a hurry since then!) Love your Roscoe and that is a splendid job you did on that beautiful quilt. Thanks for the giveaway too, many blessings:)

  20. I’m sure I don’t have just ONE favorite notion so I thought I’d mention one that I love that maybe some people haven’t used. No-melt template plastic. It’s perfect for not-too-tiny applique shapes so you can turn with edges with starch and an iron. Then they are ready to stitch down by hand or machine according to your preference.

  21. Well besides the rotary cutter…..I have this little 1X6 inch ruler that I love, because I can easily pick it up with one hand and put it where it needs to be over and over quickly for cutting those small pieces apart, like HST’s.

  22. My favorite notion and one I rarely have to use thankfully is my Havel Ultra Pro Seam Ripper. I love the thin razor blade cutter on that which makes it so much easier when I do need to usse it.

  23. Hmmm… I have quite a few faves, but lately it’s been the GIANT hemostats I have for turning narrow items right-side out, or for pulling a cord through a drawstring channel. It’s PRICELESS.

  24. I’m a follower… my favorite notion has to be my gingher scissors… it’s the sharpest pair in the house and off limits to everyone but me 🙂

  25. My favorite notion is a high quality thread. I have learned that high quality thread is the most important notion to have in every project.

    Thank you

  26. I have a wooden iron. I use it to press seams with my patchwork blocks. The other item is a six inch ruler. In a pinch I use that for pressing.

  27. I am a follower and I like a lot of ny notions so to pick one is hard… probably my 12.5″ creative grid ruler, it stays put on the fabric better than any of the others!

  28. My new favorite notion is a rotary cutter. I put it on my Christmas Wish List 🙂 First time entering a contest on your blog. Thanks for the chance to win!
