What Was I Thinking?

Have you ever made a decision and then wonder, “Why on Earth did I do that??”  I do that all the time.  Really.  All the time.  I think it’s a character flaw.  Or maybe I’m just a tad bit insane.

My latest bout of insanity involves paper piecing.  Several months ago I was approached by a friend and she asked if I would like to design a spring themed paper pieced block.  Of course I emailed right away and said, “Yes!  I’d love to!”

As I typed that little sentence in response to her question I was instantly beginning to panic.  Why did I say yes?  Did I not remember the last paper pieced block I designed, My Little Monster?  I’m not a seasoned paper piecer much less a paper piece designer.  The thought of designing a paper pieced block actually causes me great anxiety.  But, alas my inability to say no to any challenge forced me to hit the send button.  I was committed to the spring block.

I kept telling myself I had plenty of time to get it done.  After all it wasn’t due until April 10th.   Fast forward a couple months and now it’s April.  And I had nothing.  Zero.  Zip.  Nada.  And only 10 days left to figure it out.

Yesterday, April 3rd, I finally sat down and worked on it.  Master procrastinator…remember?  I can tell you that I thought about backing out of my commitment more than once.  But I knew that wasn’t an option for me.  I’d rather poke my eyes out than give up.

Do you want to see what I came up with?  Well sorry, you have to wait a few more days.  {insert evil laugh here}  But I will show you a little bitty peek.

Any ideas?  I think you will like it.  I’m especially happy considering how much anxiety this little block caused me.

You might be asking yourself why I went on and on about how hard this was for me.  I think it’s important to remember to push ourselves out of our comfort zones.  Try something new that you normally wouldn’t.  You might end up being really great at it or you might suck.  But…you will never know unless you try!

  1. I need to design a block for my hubby’s cousin but I have no idea where to even start. Did you just dive in or did you look for hints online?

  2. I have no idea what this will be but I do love the fabric! And speaking of fabric, I just received my background fabric package today. That was fast service! And the orange border fabric you chose for me goes perfectly with my fat quarters. Thank you!

  3. Oh, I can’t wait to see the whole block!!! Tease!!!!! Never paper pieced and I had to design a corner block for a quilt so I did a PP block…could not find out how to make Delectable Mountains go around a corner! Yours is so much more intricate than mine – scrumptious!!!
