Circus Quilt is all Quilted!

I have officially finished quilting another quilt!  Woohoo!  I’m very proud of myself although I still have at least 10 tops to go.  I’m really hoping to get them all done before the end of the year.  It will be interesting to see if that actually happens.

I finished up the Circus Quilt yesterday and I was able to take pictures this afternoon.

I really like the lime green I chose for backing.

It dawned on me today that all of this quilting means one thing….lots of BINDING!  Yuck!  I have 3 quilts right now that need binding.  I really wish there was a binding fairy!

I practiced some freehand feathers today.  I’ve never been able to get them to look right.  But, I think the ones I did today turned out pretty good.  I still need more practice but it’s a good start.  I used the new white Perma Core thread I bought.  I really like how it sews.

I started feeling adventurous and this is what happened…I think it’s my favorite.

Now I need to find a quilt top so I can use this design!  Who knows if I’ll ever be able to do it again.  I’ll probably panic when it’s a real quilt top.

I’ve learned one important thing about freehand quilting…it’s not going to be perfect.  I’m very hard on myself and I hate it when I mess up.  But…after I’m done and I pull the quilt off the frame the boo boos are barely noticeable.  I try to keep this in mind every time I start a new quilt.

  1. Great quilting!! Love the circus quilt. I watched a quilting video once and on it they looked at mistakes and said “I’m not going to rip that out right away, it’s almost good enough and I’ll wait to see how it fits in with the rest at the end”. That was really an awakening for me. yep, my quilting if far from perfect, but as a whole, not so bad 🙂 Good lesson to learn. Feathers look great 🙂

  2. Great job, Vicki! I completely understand about thinking your quilting should be perfect. I’m that way, too, and hate it! But I’m learning as you are that we are much harder on ourselves than others are. Not only do the boo boos disappear when you look at the quilt as a whole but if you have not prewashed your fabrics (I don’t) it will crinkle nicely after laundering. Threads get pulled in and everything you thought was wrong will no longer be noticeable. 🙂

  3. If I lived closer I would SO trade you binding time for quilting time! LOL I am not so good at the quilting yet, but I haveto pat my own back and say my binding is pretty nice! I think your quilt is so fun!

  4. What a fun quilt! I know what you mean about wishing for a binding fairy – but, you know what? I had two quilts to bind last week. I did them one right after the other and I think it worked out well. I kind of got into a rhythm and I think a third one would have just zipped through. Alas, I didn’t have a third quilt ready to bind.
